“Maya Bazaar” is a spectacular mythological play with lively music, imaginative scenery (including sets of painted curtains, wings and frills!), impressive lighting and innovative special effects that will leave an indelible impression on the audience. A true celebration of the theatricality characteristic of Company Theatre, “Maya Bazaar” is run by members of the one family under a banner first established in 1885. To this day, Surabhi continues to tour Andhra Pradesh extensively, performing in pitched tents for months at a stretch. This epic drama narrates the love story of Sashirekha, the daughter of Lord Krishna’’s elder brother, Balarama and Abhimanyu, his sister Subhadra’’s son. Central to the plot is the colourful character of Ghatodgaja who uses his magical powers and ingenuity to bring the lovers together in the face of opposition. The play is a must see for its innovative special effects on stage including the descent of Narada from the skies and flying ladoos that land in the mouth of the hungry Ghatodgaja!

What does it mean to dedicate a lifetime to an art? What is the conviction that fires some artists to remain unstinting in their devotion to their art? Like gold that is heated and melted and heated again to remove all impurities so it can shine in its own pure splendour, an artiste goes through life’’s tribulations and journeys and all the while, his capacity to interpret the learnings and add them to his repertoire of expressions keeps growing. Three actors who have travelled a long way and are with us and have consented to show us a jhalak of their precious art and how they negotiate it. This is one of the special treasure we are sharing with our audience this year. Master Hiranniaih: Give him a situation and he can speak hilariously on the topic for hours! Where do these words come from? The Jadugar of words will have you in his spell for 20 minutes! Nagarathnamma: The 87 year old demure and softspoken actress has a reputation of making the bravest hearts in the audience shudder when she transforms into impersonating a villainous Bheema or Keechaka or Duryodhana!……(Many a male actor would think twice before accepting to act opposite her when she changes like a chamelion and delivers Keechaka’’s or Bhima’’s lines!) Sarita Joshi….the undisputed Queen of the Gujarati Theatre shares her journey from the age of 12 to now…..across the years from the Parsee Theatre to new, modern, contemporary Indian Theatre and now Television and soaps!

Envisaged as theatrical journeys with the repertory companies, five of the selected films examine the life and art of traveling actors in France and across India (in Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Karnataka and West Bengal). One film showcases one of the most durable artifacts of what is truly an ephemeral art: the theatre brochure.

A Korean love story that seconds only to “Romeo and Juliet” Choon-Hyang was a daughter of a widow ”Kisaeng” ( a group of women who made their livelihood by dancing and singing) at Namwon, a southern provincial town of Korea. She happened to meet with Lee Mong-Ryong, a son of a noble family, and fell in deep love with him. But after some days, they were obliged to depart because the father of Mr. Lee had to serve an official position in Hanyang (the old name of Seoul). In the mean time, a new governor came to the town of Choon-Hyang. He came to hear about the beauty of Choon-Hyang and forced her to stand by him. But Choon-Hyang repeatedly refused his order and was finally put into jail. The new governor decided at last to kill her on the day of his birthday party. On the other hand, Lee Mong-Ryong in Hanyang had successfully passed the ”Kwago” (a government exam to recruit high-level officers) and became an ”Amhaengosa” (a secret inspector on local administration commissioned by the royal decree). He came first to the town of Choon-Hyang disguising his position. There, some interesting and funny incidents took place due to his disguise. Finally, he appeared at the birthday party place of the governor, disclosed his position, and punished the governor who was notorious for his misbehaviors. In the end, Lee Mong-Ryong was happily reunited with Choon-Hyang, whose royalty moved him greatly.

“Bahumukhi” is a play set in the present times. The play unveils in multiple layers as the world that unfolds before a journalist who goes looking for a sensational story. In the process, what is put to test is the dividing line between perception and reality. All characters that the journalist creates come into his life with a set of stories that are entirely their own. In them one finds the pain of transition, the emptiness of urban life, the phoniness of superficial relationships and the allure of youthful love. Around all this runs a deep and tragic undercurrent of desensitization of human life, triggered by media hype. “Bahumukhi” was written specially for Ranga Shankara Theatre Festival ’07 by Vivek Shanbhag and produced by Ranga Shankara and Sanchaya.

The play revolves round the antics of a middle-aged couple, Bhageerathi and Kapanipathi, whose children are grown up and live in distant cities. As they squabble over petty domestic matters, they receive letters from their son and daughter. While the son has written to invite them over to Bombay for the coming Deepavali, their artist-daughter, who has married to a gentleman from France, announces her desire to bring her husband home. Bhageerathi sees the visit to Bombay as a long-awaited opportunity to exercise her power as the mother-in-law, while Kapineepathi wants to subject his French son-in-law through the torture he has experienced during his first Deepavali at the in-laws” house. But both of them are in for surprises.

The Magic Drum is an original adaptation for the stage by BLT based on the book of folk tales ompiled by Sudha Murty. The folk tales are drawn from many lands: Funny tales, racy tales, tales of wise men, foolish men, evil men, oh yes, the smart women, clever girls, and the hapless kings, the princes, princesses, the hip minstrels, the snappy jesters, and all those animals . . . . The production is in partnership with Dream a Dream, that has programmes in education and life skills development for disadvantaged children. BLT has Sudha Murty’s exclusive permission to dramatize the stories from her book for this DAD-BLT production. The Magic Drum is a family entertainer as well as a play for children. It will reach the general public in evening shows, and school children in morning / afternoon shows.

Georg Büchner’’s Woyzeck is one the most celebrated plays in the German theatre repertory and has aroused much curiosity and fascination since it was first written in the 1830s. At one level, the play is a gripping story of love, betrayal and madness, a journey into the dark heart of human jealousy. At another, it is a nuances exploration of the dehumanizing effects of poverty and a scathing statement on hypocrisy and moral boundaries. Woyzeck is the first play in Western dramatic literature to politicize tragedy and feature a commoner as a tragic figure. Franz Woyzeck is a peasant-soldier whose fate is sealed as much by his own actions as by the forces of oppression in nineteenth century Prussian society. The play explores lust, infidelity, brutality, depravity and murder with a radical vision and compact intensity unequalled in the history of drama. Drawing inspiration from different translations and adaptations of the play, a new script of Woyzeck has been specially created for this production. The script underscores Woyzeck’’s lack of voice and agency, his helplessness and despair, and his gradual disintegration as he is bullied and tormented by his superiors, subjected to bizarre medical experiments by the army doctor, and betrayed by his beautiful and vivacious mistress.
