Sizzle and shimmy and swivel. Get set to throw your mid-week professional propriety out of the window, while you burn up the dance floor. This Wednesday is the Chennai’s induction into the colourful world of the annual India International Salsa Congress 2008. And this year, it’s bigger than ever. The annual salsa congress — an alluring display of athletics, skill and flamboyancy — brings together some of India’s most prominent salsa dancers and famous salseros from around the world. Organised by the Lourd Vijay Dance Studio and held in Bangalore (for the fourth consecutive year) the event runs from August 14 to 17. This year’s congress features the ESPN World Salsa Championship Qualifiers, besides exhaustive workshops on the different aspects of dance. And of course — parties. So, it’s appropriate that the congress begins with some serious partying, at Chennai’s most popular salsa venue, Havana at The Raintree Hotel on August 6. The party will be preceded by a workshop by Lourd Vijay, the festival director. Lourd, who is based in Bangalore but comes to Chennai on weekends to teach salsa classes at Talwalkars (Anna Nagar), is a dancer, choreographer and instructor. He has travelled around the world, to places such as the United States, Israel, Hong Kong, the United Kingdom and Singapore to train under renowned dance instructors such as Eddie Torres, Frankie Martinez, Alex Da Silva and Liz Lira. He also conducts International salsa workshops, including one at the World Salsa Congress, in Italy and, recently, at the salsa Festival in Hong Kong.

Rock Around The Clock Dance Company, in association with Alliance Francaise de Bangalore & Press Sponsor EXPLOCITY.COM will be conducting ROCK N ROLL FEST 2008, a series of Rock ‘n’ Roll theme parties.

Karaoke contests with Val and /Best Dancing Couple Contests will be just some of the highlights of this festival.

The official dance venue of the festival is NYK’s located on Residency Road.

Each party will have different themes:
– 20th, July : black and white.
– 27th, July : flower power.
– 3rd, August : bell bottoms and skirts.
– 10th, August : Elvis finals.

Dance Category: JIVE & CHA CHA CHA

The elimination round for the Dance and Karaoke contests will be on 27th July.

The final rounds of the contest will be held on 10th August.

The winners would be awarded:
* The title “Bacardi Best Dancing Couple Award 2008″
* The finalist would be covered in Explocity and Mytime.

Monsoon Magic from Latino Rhythms

Latino Rhythms Dance Academy is all set to rock your monsoons with its Monsoon Jive Workshop. The jive workshop that is designed for beginners will be held between July 14 and July 30, 2008 on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday at Platinum Bodies, Opp Ramakrishna Nursing Home, Jayanagar II Block, Bangalore.

It does not matter if you have never danced before or do not have a partner. The curriculum of the workshop includes the basics of two-step jive, styling tips for both men and women, lifts and tricks, intermediate jive and tips for social dancing.

Latino Rhythms Dance Academy has successfully trained over 2000 students for the last two years in ballroom dance. Under John Anthony, the Founder Director and Chief Instructor, Latino Rhythms saw its birth in August 2006 and has groomed thousands into various dance forms including Salsa, Jive, Bachata, Merengue and Bollywood freestyle.

With just a few students at its initial stages, today the schools runs three batches in Indiranagar, Jayanagar and Cooke Town and has over 200 students in 8 weekend batches. Latino Rhythms Dance Academy also caters to the dancing enthusiasts of the corporate sector. With regular week-day classes at Talisma and Oracle, John Anthony has made many people with two left feet to confident dancers.

The students of Latino Rhythms perform at various platforms / events, the main event being the International Salsa Congress in 2007.
